DIRECTOR OF FAMILY MINISTRIES

Overview

Flamborough Baptist Church is a growing community situated in Waterdown, characterized as a welcoming group of Christ-followers, who strive to build a loving community both locally and globally. Our community has experienced growth in young families over the last several years and currently has an average weekly enrolment of 90 children in Sunday School. Our purpose is to “Love God, Love Others, and Make Disciples.”

We are seeking a full-time Director of Family Ministries who is passionate about leading our Children’s ministry as their primary focus.

Purpose

To be a relationship builder – between children and Jesus, between children and their peers, between children and their teachers, as a leader and coach to volunteers, and as a partner in discipleship with parents.

To be a compelling teacher – nurturing the spiritual development of children from nursery to early elementary school.

To be an engaging leader – setting a direction for the Children’s ministry based on the values and goals of the church, and fostering continuous improvement of every aspect of the ministry.

Time Allocation

Full-time (40 hrs/week)

Responsibilities

– Create a programming plan that engages children based on their developmental stage and various styles of learning that leads them to Jesus and helps them grow to be more like Him each week
– Care for, encourage, and develop the gifts of the ministry volunteers through training, coaching and regular solicitation of feedback
– Communicate proactively with classroom teachers to ensure they feel supported, they are well equipped for Sunday, and that lesson plans are received and understood in advance
– Plan events for kids and families to build relationships and offer outreach opportunities
– Develop healthy community among parents, and equip parents for discipleship
– Engage with families and maintain a current and accurate database of their information in Planning Centre
– Review and develop policies and procedures to ensure safety for kids and volunteers
– Create administrative processes and identify efficiencies to ensure the administrative tasks related to Children’s ministry are well organized and able to be delegated as necessary
– Build relationships with other Children’s ministry staff (Pastors/Directors) at other churches to build a collaborative network of support, and to exchange ideas and improve the ministry and grow as a leader and professional
– Provide meaningful ministry updates to leadership, parents, and at membership meetings to foster collaboration and partnership with all stakeholders

– Submit and manage the annual Children’s ministry budget

Accountability

– The Director of Family Ministries reports to the Senior Pastor, and is also accountable to the Elders.

Qualifications

– A Christian who has demonstrated a growing and consistent faith in and walk with God and meets character qualifications for church leadership (1 Tim 3:1-8; Titus 1:5-9).
– Genuine love for children, an ability to engage with them naturally, and a passion for their growth and wellbeing.
– Communicates with gentleness and clarity, engaging authentically with parents, volunteers, and children
– A proven leader who is passionate about building teams of volunteers in order to execute all aspects of the children’s ministry.
– Ability to think and act independently with a high degree of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality
– Positive attitude and positive approach to problem solving, must be solution oriented
– Ability to handle all situations with core values in mind, dealing with all people with grace and humility
– A graduate of a Bible college with a focus on Children’s Ministry is preferred.
– Post-secondary education in teaching (Bachelor, Education) is considered an asset.
– Possesses passion and vision for this ministry; a successful ministry track record.

Mission

Build a strong community of Christ followers characterized by the fruits of the spirit amongst the children and parents/guardians of children at FBC, and the volunteer teams who provide leadership to programs and the children directly.

Areas of Responsibility

Ministry Programming (~20 Hours/Week)

– Develop a curriculum plan that engages children based on their developmental stage and various styles of learning that leads them to Jesus and helps them grow to be more like Him each week

– Review weekly lesson plan and communicate with classroom leaders
– Ensure classrooms have all resources necessary for various programs in advance
– Lead all Sunday morning children’s programming
– Visit classrooms and provide assistance as necessary

Administration & Management (~12 Hours/Week)
– Develop a volunteer schedule that promotes cycles of serving and rest for volunteers, while ensuring that volunteers are present enough to build meaningful relationships with students, and that volunteers are engaged and want the same
– Engage with new and existing families and maintain a current and accurate database of their information in Planning Centre
– Create administrative processes and identify efficiencies to ensure the administrative tasks are well organized and able to be delegated as necessary
– Review and develop policies and procedures to ensure safety for kids and volunteers is being maintained and volunteer training is completed prior to serving
– Attend and participate in ministry staff meetings and Elders meetings as needed

Vision & Growth (~8 Hours/Week)
– Maintain long-term annual and multi-year plan for programming ensuring that as children move through the various classes and programs in the Children’s ministry that they are being taught the entire biblical narrative and their place in it, and learning about all the practices of the Christian life equipping them for graduation to Junior High
– Plan events for kids and families to build relationships and offer outreach opportunities
– Build relationships with other Children’s ministry staff (Pastors/Directors) at other churches to build a collaborative network of support, and to exchange ideas and improve the ministry and grow as a leader and professional
– Actively identify and pursue opportunities for professional development, education and growth to ensure that you are best equipped to serve in your role, volunteers are stretched in the growth, and the ministry does not stagnate with time

Sharing rationale and objectives along as the status quo is changed and new approaches are attempted, in order to achieve buy in and avoid confusion.

Goals

Between 3-5 annual objectives to focus on.

1. Develop scheduling plan that fosters relationship building between children and regular classroom teachers who want to be scheduled with more consistently in order to develop and maintain relationships with children in their regular classroom

2. Develop strategies for classroom teachers to use to help students with learning challenges (ADHD, autism spectrum, etc.) be successful in Sunday school, and provide coaching and feedback as they are implemented.
3. Oversee a volunteer safety program, such as ‘Plan to Protect’ and ensure all volunteers have completed necessary background checks and have been fully trained prior to serving
4. Ensure Sunday morning programming for children continues through the summer months
5. Develop a plan/schedule to engage regularly when new families join the church (Sunday morning chats, phone calls, emails, etc.) to ensure they feel a part of the community at FBC
